Revamped AI Character Behavior in Ready or Not

In the world of video games, artificial intelligence plays a huge role in keeping the players engaged and excited. But creating interesting AI is only half the battle. The real challenge lies in giving them life, in finding the perfect balance that allows the characters to become Memorable, Adrenaline-pumping encounters. In this development update for Ready or Not, we're excited to Show off some of our newly revamped AI characters and the exciting features that bring them to life.

Revamped Suspect Melee Combat

Previously, enemies in Ready or Not would charge at the player and hit them, leaving themselves exposed and leaving the player unable to react. But now, we've revamped the melee combat system so that suspects have more tactics under their belt. When attacking the player and stunning them, suspects will stop and run to find cover for their next ambush attack. This makes for a much more interesting, fast-paced combat system that keeps the player guessing.

Unarmed to Armed Behaviors

Suspects also take AdVantage of much better unarmed to armed behaviors, using a tiered decision system to choose the most optimal action. If a suspect is closer to the player than to a weapon, they will melee the player first to stun them before picking up the weapon. If both the player and the weapon are a considerable distance away, the suspect will move to cover to prepare for an ambush.

New Ambush Mechanics

To demonstrate the effectiveness of the revamped AI, we've included a snippet of gameplay in the Meth's Attic section. Suspects now have a myriad of behaviors they can take advantage of to both outsmart and outlive the player. Shooting from cover is a key component of the system, and suspects will use it often, either blind firing or peeking out to aim at the player. Depending on certain enemy stimuli, suspects can manipulate how they take cover, switching sides for improved positioning to best suit their needs.

Shooting From Cover

Slow walking is key to avoiding a surprise attack in Ready or Not. The AI characters not just beeline towards the player, but instead use different tactics, which makes engagements much more intense. Whether equipped with a knife, a gun, or a bomb VEST, cover is now a crucial staple on how the AI can ambush the player.

Suspects' Hiding Ability

One of the main goals of creating Ready or Not was crafting a tense, foreboding atmosphere where unchecked corners are a matter of life or death. With that in mind, we've given our AI the ability to hide in certain places, such as under beds, tables, and inside closets. Aggressive noises like gunshots and shouts can instigate the AI to move to these cover positions.

Playing Dead

If the player is in a room where a suspect is hiding, they'll wait until no one is looking to jump out and strike. However, certain conditions, like compliance yelling, being stunned, damaged, or fired at, can cause the suspect to leave cover, with a chance of surrendering. If they're shot close to a C2 door breach or even just shot at in certain situations, suspects can play dead to get the upper HAND in a dire situation.

Environmental Storytelling

Many players noted that our suspects were standing or staring aimlessly between their patrols. We've now added animations and world interactions to provide Context to their place in the level. Things like smoking, admiring a piece of art, or texting are all things that ground the AI in reality. Suspects even occasionally relieve themselves.

Conclusion

We Are excited to share these AI improvements with our players. By layering them with our narrative-driven level art, we hope to provide an even more immersive experience for those who play Ready or Not. The new and improved melee combat, cover system, hiding ability, and world interactions should make for a much more challenging and engaging game that keeps players entertained again and again.
