Introduction
Welcome back to part 2 of our Rising 3: The Ultimate Gaming Benchmark Guide - Overclocking Edition. In the previous part, we compared the Horizon 3 1300X and 1200 to the Ryzen 5 1400, Core i5 7400, and Pentium G4560 at stock clock speeds. In this part, we will focus on overclocking the unlocked Ryzen 3 and 5 CPUs and retesting them against the locked Pentium and Core i5 CPUs.
Benchmark Guide: Overclocking Edition
In this benchmark guide, we will be exploring the performance of the Horizon 3 1200 and Ryzen 5 1400 CPUs when overclocked. By comparing the overclocked CPUs to the Pentium G4560 and Core i5 7400, we aim to provide you with valuable insights into the benefits of overclocking and the cost-performance ratio of each CPU.
Comparison of Horizon 3 1300X and 1200 to Ryzen 5 1400, Core i5 7400, and Pentium G4560
In this section, we will compare the Horizon 3 1300X and 1200 CPUs to the Ryzen 5 1400, Core i5 7400, and Pentium G4560 to determine the differences in performance and cost-effectiveness.
Pros:
- Horizon 3 1300X and 1200 deliver similar performance when overclocked to 4 GHz.
- The overclocked Ryzen 3 CPUs outperform the Pentium G4560 by 15% in minimum frame rates.
- The overclocked Ryzen 3 1200 performs on par with the Core i5 7400 while being significantly cheaper.
- The Horizon 3 1200 offers better cost-performance ratio compared to the Core i5 7400.
Cons:
- The Horizon 3 1300X is not worth the extra cost compared to the Horizon 3 1200 when overclocked to the same 4 GHz frequency.
- Overclocking requires additional cooling and motherboard support.
- The Horizon 3 1200's performance is limited when paired with high-end GPUs like the GTX 1080.
Testing Methods and GPU Configurations
In this section, we will discuss the testing methods and GPU configurations used in the benchmarking process. We tested the CPUs with the GeForce GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080 at 1080p resolution.
Testing Methods:
- CPUs tested: Horizon 3 1200 (stock and overclocked to 4 GHz), Ryzen 5 1400 (tested at 4 GHz), Core i5 7400, and Pentium G4560.
- GPUs tested: GeForce GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080.
- Games tested: Battlefield 1, F1 2016, Far Cry Primal, Total War Warhammer, Overwatch, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rainbow Six Siege, World of Tanks, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
- Settings: All games tested at their highest graphical settings.
GPU Configurations:
- GeForce GTX 1060: Reveals severe GPU bottleneck, limits average frame rate to 80 FPS and minimum frame rate to around 71 FPS.
- GeForce GTX 1070: Shows improved performance for all CPU configurations. Overclocked Horizon 3 1200 is 4% faster on average and 7% faster in minimum frame rates compared to Pentium G4560. It is 2% slower than Core i5 7400.
- GeForce GTX 1080: Highlights the performance boost enabled by a faster processor. Overclocked Horizon 3 1200 matches the performance of Core i5 7400 and outperforms Pentium G4560 by 7% in both average and minimum frame rates.
Results: Battlefield 1
Battlefield 1 results show that with a GeForce GTX 1060, all five CPU configurations experience severe GPU bottlenecks, resulting in an average frame rate of 80 FPS and a minimum frame rate of around 71 FPS. When upgraded to a GeForce GTX 1070, overclocked Horizon 3 1200 performs 4% faster on average and 7% faster in minimum frame rates compared to Pentium G4560. It is also 2% slower than the Core i5 7400. With a GeForce GTX 1080, overclocked Horizon 3 1200 matches the performance of the Core i5 7400 and outperforms Pentium G4560 by 7% in both average and minimum frame rates.
Results: F1 2016
In F1 2016, the performance margins between the CPU configurations are more extreme compared to Battlefield 1. With a GeForce GTX 1060, the overclocked Horizon 3 1200 is 35% faster than the Pentium G4560 in minimum frame rates. The overclocked Horizon 3 1200 also matches the performance of the more expensive Core i5 7400 when paired with a GeForce GTX 1070. When upgraded to a GeForce GTX 1080, the overclocked Horizon 3 1200 becomes 44% faster than the Pentium G4560 and even edges ahead of the Core i5 7400 by a 7% margin in the average frame rate.
Results: Far Cry Primal
Far Cry Primal, being a mostly GPU-bound Game, shows minimal differences in performance across all CPU configurations with a GeForce GTX 1060. Upgrading to a GeForce GTX 1070, the overclocked Horizon 3 1200 delivers 6% more frames on average and 11% more frames in the minimum frame rate. It matches the performance of the Core i5 7400 when overclocked. With a GeForce GTX 1080, the overclocked Horizon 3 1200 comfortably outperforms the Core i5 7400 and is 18% faster than the Pentium G4560.
Results: Total War Warhammer
In Total War Warhammer, we start to see variances between the CPU configurations when using a GeForce GTX 1060. The Pentium G4560 falls behind in this CPU-intensive title. Overclocking the Horizon 3 1200 allows it to make up the ground and match the performance of the Core i5 7400 and Ryzen 5 1400 when paired with a GeForce GTX 1070. With a GeForce GTX 1080, the overclocked Horizon 3 1200 catches up and outperforms the Core i5 7400.
