Episode 1: Creating Backdrops
Welcome back, everyone! Today marks the beginning of my DIY Brunch Series, where I will be sharing the process of how I personalized my brunch and made it special for my bridesmaids. I wanted them to feel loved and appreciated, and what better way to do that than by putting in some effort to make the brunch unique? In this first episode, I will be focusing on creating the backdrops for the event. So, let's dive right in!
Materials Needed for Creating Backdrops
To get started with this project, You will need a few essential materials. Make sure you have the following:
- Jigsaw or skill saw
- Three 4x8 sheets of plywood
- Hinges (L-Shaped hinges recommended)
- Tape measure
- Sandpaper
- Paint (color of your choice)
- Paintbrush or roller
- Cookie sheet or paint tray
Measuring and Cutting the Plywood
The first step is to determine the size of your backdrops. Measure and decide whether you want two 5-foot backdrops and one 6-foot backdrop or two 6-foot backdrops and one 7-foot backdrop. Once you have made your decision, mark the center of the board with a tape measure and measure 6 feet from the center point. This will allow you to Create the perfect Arch Shape for the backdrops.
Next, go 2 feet down from the 6-foot mark and anchor the tape measure to create a stable guide for drawing the arch shape. This will ensure accuracy and precision in creating the arch. Once you have the arch shape, draw a vertical line from the top of the arch to the bottom, cutting off the excess pieces of wood.
Sanding and Painting the Backdrops
After cutting off the excess wood, it's time to sand the backdrops to smoothen out any rough edges. Although I did my best, I realized later that I could have done a better job at this step. So, take your time and make sure to sand the backdrops thoroughly for a clean and polished look.
Now, it's time to add some color! I chose to paint my backdrops with a combination of black and white paint. The black paint creates a striking contrast against the white decor I had in mind for my wedding. Use a paintbrush or roller to Apply an even coat of paint to the entire surface of the backdrops. It may be a bit time-consuming, but the end result is worth it.
Using Hinges and Creating Legs
To make the backdrops sturdy and portable, we need to attach legs to them. For this, we will be using hinges. If you have extra hinges lying around, feel free to use them. Otherwise, L-shaped hinges from the hardware store will work wonders.
Measure about an inch and a half in from the edge of the board and draw a straight line. Repeat this step on both sides of the board, ensuring symmetry. Once the lines are drawn, screw the hinges into place. These hinges will serve as the connection between the backdrops and the legs.
Sturdy Support for the Backdrops
With the hinges in place, it's time to stand up the backdrops. To ensure stability, make sure the legs are pushed in securely and evenly. The backdrops should stand on their own, relying on both legs for support. However, on uneven surfaces, there may be a slight imbalance. Nevertheless, the backdrops will still stand, even if one leg is providing more support than the other.
And there you have it! The backdrops are complete and ready for use. They provide a beautiful backdrop for any event, whether it's a bridal shower, a bachelor trip, or, in my case, a brunch with my lovely bridesmaids. Stay tuned for the next episode, where I will be sharing how I sent out the invitations for the brunch. Thank you for joining me on this DIY Journey!

FAQ
Q: Can I use other materials instead of plywood for the backdrops?
A: Absolutely! Plywood is a cost-effective and sturdy option, but you can get creative and use other materials such as fabric, cardboard, or even pallets if that suits your style and budget.
Q: How long does it take to complete the backdrops?
A: The time required depends on your DIY skills and the level of detail you want to achieve. Overall, it took me one evening to complete the sanding and painting process, but it may take longer if you want to add intricate designs or multiple coats of paint.
Q: Can I personalize the backdrops further?
A: Definitely! The backdrops can serve as a canvas for your creativity. Feel free to add decals, signage, or other decorative elements to suit your event's theme or personal style.
Q: Are these backdrops suitable for outdoor use?
A: While the backdrops are sturdy, they may not withstand harsh weather conditions or strong winds. It's best to keep them indoors or in a sheltered outdoor area for optimal use and longevity.
