Converting a Logo or Image to a Vector Image and Creating a 3D Model

Hey, what's up guys! In this tutorial, I'm going to Show You how to take a logo or any JPEG image and convert it into a vector image. We will then transform that vector image into a 3D model and import it into Adobe After Effects to bring it to life with animation. Let's get started!

To begin, open Adobe Illustrator and go to File > Open. Select the image you want to turn into a vector image and click Open. Once the image is in Illustrator, resize it if necessary.

To convert the image into a vector image, select the image and go to Image Trace in your toolbar. Click on the dropdown arrow next to Image Trace to explore different options. For this tutorial, we'll stick with the default settings. Click Expand to see the vector paths.

Now that the image is converted into vector paths, you can select and manipulate each individual Shape. For example, you can move the stars to separate them from the rest of the image. With the lettering, select the paths inside each letter's holes and delete them. This step ensures that the holes in the letters remain empty when rendered in a 3D program.

Save your Adobe Illustrator project, but make sure to change the version to Illustrator 8. This will allow you to transform the vector image into a 3D model.

Next, open your 3D modeling software, such as Cinema 4D. Import the Adobe Illustrator vector image into Cinema 4D by selecting File > Merge Objects and choosing the vector image file. Now, you'll see all the paths from Illustrator in Cinema 4D.

To Create a 3D model, you'll need to extrude each path individually. First, select the HyperNURBS option in the toolbar and then choose Extrude NURBS. Take each path and drag it underneath the Extrude NURBS option or place it inside the Extrude option. Copy and paste a blank Extrude NURBS element multiple times to make extruding easier. Drag each path into the Extrude NURBS parent to complete the extrusion.

After extruding each path, you may need to adjust the positions of certain elements, such as the stars, to ensure they are in the right places. Once everything is in the correct position, you can add color to the 3D logo.

To add color, create new materials for each element of the logo. Match the colors to the original logo by adjusting the RGB levels for each material. Apply the materials to the corresponding paths to achieve the desired color scheme.

With the colored 3D logo in place, you can now render it by selecting the Render option in the toolbar. This will give you an idea of how the final 3D logo will look.

Importing the 3D Model into After Effects for Animation

Now that we have our 3D model, let's import it into Adobe After Effects for animation. But before we proceed, make sure you have the Element 3D plugin installed. You can get this plugin from Video COPILOT's Website.

Open After Effects and create a new composition by going to Composition > New Composition. Name the composition and adjust the duration and frame rate according to your needs.

To import the 3D model, go to Layer > New > Camera. Keep all the attributes the same and click OK. Then, create a new solid layer that will serve as the Element 3D layer. Keep the attributes as they are and select OK.

Apply the Element 3D plugin to the solid layer by going to Effect > Video Copilot > Element 3D. In the Element 3D interface, select Scene Setup. On the left panel, click on Import and choose your cinema 4D file. Ensure all the preferences are set correctly and click OK.

Now, you have your 3D model inside After Effects. You can use the camera tools to navigate around the 3D object.
