The Cycle of Time in Battlestar Galactica

In the world of Battlestar Galactica, time is cyclical. The same events occur again and again, and the central principle of this cycle is that humans develop and then produce artificial intelligence, which rebels against them. The humans are then forced to leave and set up somewhere else, and eventually make more artificial intelligence, which then rebels, and so on and so forth.

The earliest cycle we know about is Cobalt, and on the planet Cobalt existed the human species of the Lords of Cobalt. We have no idea if they originated on that planet or if they are as much a victim of this cycle as everyone else and at some point came there from somewhere else, but either way, they had a polytheistic religion that's got the whole kind of Artemis and Ares and Zeus mythology going on. They separate themselves into 12 tribes of humans that are all named after the various zodiac signs.

They develop on Cobalt for a while until eventually they Create their own artificial intelligence in the form of humanoid Cylons that make up the 13th tribe. These Cylons have resurrection technology where they can be downloaded into auxiliary bodies when they die. Eventually, there is a war, and the 13th tribe fights the other 12, and then everybody has to leave Cobalt. The 13th tribe goes one way and eventually finds a planet called Earth. The 12 tribes go in the other direction, they find the Syrian system, and they set up the 12 colonies.

The Final Five and the Monotheistic Religion

The Final Five are five Cylons from the 13th tribe who have been having all kinds of prophetic visions and reading ancient scrolls and such. They figure out the cycle of time and they realize that they need to get to the 12 colonies because they are inevitably going to create Centurions of their own and they will inevitably be a war. The only way to break the cycle is to get there and warn them first.

The Final Five turn up and they put us up to this. They agree to give the Centurions resurrection technology in return for them signing an armistice with the humans. The Final Five then adopt the monotheist religion of the Centurions, and this becomes the standard practice of the whole Cylon empire.

They let go of the Centurions who helped them, but it's left kind of open-ended as to whether this is a good idea or not because this might be the thing that makes this still part of the cycle because they may one day come back and Seek vengeance or develop sentience or whatever.
