Introduction

Hey everyone, Dice here! It's been a while since I last uploaded a video, and I wanted to give You all an update on what I've been up to. In this article, I'll be sharing the reasons behind my absence, discussing the redesign of my character, introducing a new game project, and detailing the process of generating a game idea. So let's jump right in!

Why I've Been Away

I know it's been seven years since my last upload, and that may seem like a long time. However, I assure you that I haven't been slacking off. Over the past three weeks, I've been faced with a lack of games to showcase and no Current school projects to share. Additionally, I had temporarily halted work on my main game, which I had announced in my discord server. I understand that the way I announced it may have given the impression of a much more serious event, but rest assured, it was merely a temporary pause in development.

Redesigning My Character

During my break, I took the opportunity to revamp my character design. I felt that the previous iteration was rushed, and I wanted to Create a more refined and carefully crafted look this time. I spent quality time sitting down and sketching out a new design that truly captured the essence of my character. With the redesign complete, I was excited to move forward with my projects.

Starting a New Game Project

In the absence of any immediate ideas for a smaller game project, I turned to a game Idea Generator for inspiration. While I don't fully understand how it works, I decided to give it a try. After filling in some basic information like a company name, platform, and price, the generator produced an intriguing idea. The game was described as a war game where you wield guns, set in a Cold War era, and involved research and building on PlayStation.

Generating a Game Idea

I was fascinated by the concept generated by the game idea generator, and I began to brainstorm how to Shape it into a unique gaming experience. I jotted down all the elements I wanted the game to have: 2D platforming, digging mechanics, perma death, random generation, and, most importantly, a Cold War setting. Although the game idea was not historically accurate, I decided to create a fictional Cold War world filled with radiation, atomic experiments, and survival challenges.

Designing the Game

To bring my game idea to life, I started by designing the environment and characters. I wanted to convey the bleakness and hardships of the Cold War era through visual elements, so I incorporated a gas mask and clothing made from war remnants and tattered Fabric. These design choices vividly depicted the post-apocalyptic setting and the protagonist's role as a scavenger and miner.

Exploring the Cold War Era

While working on the game, I delved deeper into the history and themes of the Cold War era. I discovered that despite its name, the Cold War was marked by an absence of direct military conflict. I decided to create a fictional world that reflected this aspect. The game would focus on a poor man navigating a world corrupted by radiation, mining for titanium as a means of survival. This twist added a unique and engaging element to the gameplay, providing players with an immersive experience in an alternate reality.

Creating the Character

With a clear vision in mind, I began designing the main character. I wanted to convey the protagonist's hardship and resourcefulness through his appearance. The character wore a gas mask and clothing made from different layers, symbolizing his survival skills and adaptability. I also ensured that each body part and item were on separate layers, allowing for animation in Unity.

Animating the Character

Animating the character was an exciting challenge for me. I usually work with pixel art styles, and rotating sprites isn't a common practice in my projects. However, I decided to give it a try, and despite some initial concerns, the animation process turned out to be surprisingly fast. I created an idle animation that perfectly captured the character's appearance and intentions. I also developed a walk animation, although it required some refinement to synchronize the movement of the legs, arms, and torso.

Future Plans

As the development of the game progresses, I have several exciting ideas for its future. In the next devlog, I plan to add a sprint function that incorporates stamina management, a jump animation, and breakable blocks to enhance the gameplay experience. I'm thrilled to Continue working on this project and see where it takes me. Stay tuned for more updates!
