Understanding Narcissists

Hello everyone, my name is Michelle and today I'm going to be talking about narcissists again, one of my favorite subjects. In my social work classes, one of the groups of people that I wanted to work with was people with substance abuse issues. Many narcissists actually do abuse substances, and if You think about it, it makes Sense.

The Relationship between Narcissism and Substance Abuse

Narcissists often have to think about their own desires and needs, and this self-focused mindset can easily lead to an addiction to substances. For example, if you're a smoker, you probably don't qualify as a narcissist just because you smoke. However, it is interesting to note that as many as 6.12% of Americans are actually narcissists. That's six out of a hundred people. Narcissistic personality disorder is the combination of extreme traits of narcissism.

Prevalence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder

It is important to understand that everyone has some level of narcissism, so if you can relate to narcissistic personality disorder, you don't necessarily have it. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), narcissistic personality disorder is classified under cluster B personality disorders. It is considered to be trauma-genic disorder, meaning that individuals who exhibit narcissistic traits might have experienced certain traumatic events in their life.

Facial Features and Narcissistic Personality Disorder

There was a study done where individuals with narcissistic personality disorder tend to have certain facial features. It's really interesting because usually people say that you can just know when you meet someone who gives off an uncomfortable vibe. At the University of Toronto, individuals were asked to fill out a quiz testing them for certain narcissistic traits. The pictures of those individuals were then shown to other people, who were asked to guess if they thought the person in the picture was a narcissist. The results were astonishing.

Based on the density, Shape, grooming, and distinctiveness of the individuals' facial features, a significant number of people were able to accurately identify narcissistic traits. While this might seem like a pseudoscience and not a proven method, it does bring Attention to the fact that our first impressions of people often hold some truth.

The Cultural Impact on Identifying Narcissism

In today's culture, it's even harder to accurately identify narcissism. With the rise of social media and the pressure to present the best version of oneself, everyone wants to have the perfect eyebrows, and it has become a trend. It's difficult to gauge someone's level of narcissism based on their appearance alone. Meeting a person and immediately assuming they are a narcissist because of their eyebrows is not a reliable method.

The Concept of Sampaku Eyes and its Association with Narcissism

In Japanese culture, there is a belief that individuals with sampaku eyes, which means "three whites," have a negative destiny. Sampaku eyes are characterized by the white space above or below the iris being visible. Audrey Hepburn, for example, had sampaku eyes, but associating sampaku eyes with narcissism or negative qualities is not accurate.

Negative Associations of Sampaku Eyes

There are individuals with sampaku eyes who exhibit harmful and negative traits, including narcissism. They tend to experience a sense of threatened danger in their lives, which leads them to expose themselves to risky situations. However, it's important to remember that having sampaku eyes does not automatically make someone a narcissist or a danger to others. There are many other factors to consider when evaluating a person's psychological makeup.

Psychological Traits Linked to Narcissism

Apart from physical characteristics, there are various psychological traits associated with narcissism. People who display these traits may have dilated pupils, indicating a lack of guilt, low empathy, and a tendency to manipulate others. They may also engage in anti-social behavior, display aggression and violence, have poor self-control, be impulsive, and exhibit risky behavior.

Self-Reflection and Growth

If you suspect that you possess narcissistic qualities, the first step is to acknowledge it. Self-reflection is crucial in identifying areas for personal growth and improvement. It's important to understand why you may display narcissistic traits and work towards becoming a better, more empathetic individual. Remember, only a professional diagnosis can determine if someone has narcissistic personality disorder.

In conclusion, narcissists can have a significant impact on the lives of those around them. It is essential to approach these individuals with caution and Take Care of your own well-being. If you suspect you may be dealing with a narcissist, it's important to Seek support and guidance from professionals who specialize in this field.
