The Haiku Generator Project: Making AI Create Art

Have you ever wondered if a machine could create art? In our AI Camp project, we set out to explore this intriguing concept by developing a Haiku Generator. Utilizing the power of GPT2, a natural language generation program, we aimed to generate short haikus and transform them to fit the traditional haiku format. The result? A fun and easy-to-use project that not only helps with writing but also brings laughter and joy. In this article, we will take you through our motivations, the process, and the challenges we faced in creating this unique AI-driven Art Generator.

Introduction

At the heart of our project lies GPT2, a deep learning language model developed by OpenAI. Its ability to generate various types of language intrigued us, but we decided to focus on Poetry generation. Haikus, with their strict structure and Brevity, provided the perfect canvas for our exploration. Our team, composed of a machine learning engineer, a product manager, a web developer, and a data scientist, embarked on this journey with a shared passion for text generation and poetry.

Motivations Behind the Project

Why did we choose to create a haiku generator? Our motivations stemmed from a desire to delve into the field of text generation and combine it with our love for poetry. Haikus, with their concise nature and adherence to a strict Outline, posed an intriguing challenge. Moreover, the idea of witnessing a machine create art was an opportunity we couldn't resist. Through this project, we aimed to showcase the unique capabilities of AI in the realm of Creative Writing.

Resources Used for AI Model Development

Developing the AI model that powers our haiku generator required meticulous training and refining. We started by training our model on a dataset consisting of 4,000 haikus from the Haikus Out dataset. However, during the data pre-processing phase, we encountered some non-PG-13 poems generated by the AI. To ensure appropriateness, we went back to the dataset and carefully removed those poems.

To fully comprehend the workings of GPT2, we extensively studied articles and gathered insights from various sources. These resources tremendously aided us in understanding the intricacies of the language model and its potential for generating poetry. Additionally, we sourced many of our related images from these articles, enhancing the visual appeal of our project.

Overview of GPT2

GPT2, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer 2, is a language model specifically designed for predicting the next WORD based on the previous context. Its unique architecture, as depicted in the image above, utilizes self-attention and masked self-attention mechanisms. Self-attention allows the model to focus on Relevant tokens, while masked self-attention restricts the model from seeing tokens to the right of the calculated position. These features enable GPT2 to excel in language generation tasks.

Layers play a crucial role in deep learning, serving as the building blocks of the model. Each layer receives weighted input, applies nonlinear functions, and passes the transformed values to the next layer. This hierarchical structure facilitates the model's ability to understand and generate complex language Patterns.

Steps Taken in the Haiku Generator Project

Our journey towards achieving the ultimate haiku generator involved a well-thought-out plan and several steps. We began by defining the function of our generator and decided to focus on text generation. Choosing haikus as our target was a natural fit. Next, we gathered a suitable dataset, opting for the Haikus Out dataset available on GitHub.

To implement the poetry generation aspect, we needed a solid understanding of GPT2. Through intensive research and analysis, we grasped the inner workings of this powerful language model. Armed with this knowledge, we trained our model on the haikus dataset and modified it to adhere to the traditional haiku format.

To ensure the quality of the generated haikus, we cleaned the dataset by removing inappropriate poems. This meticulous process was crucial in maintaining the integrity and appropriateness of our haiku generator.

Combining the post-processing techniques with the power of the model, we achieved our final haiku generator. But it didn't end there. We wanted our creation to have a digital home, so we designed an interactive website to showcase our project's ambition and provide users with an engaging platform for generating their own haikus.

Challenges Encountered

As with any project, we encountered a few obstacles along the way. Errors and mistakes in our code prolonged the development process, causing some frustration. The Gocalc G8 server's sluggishness, allowing only one person to run the code at a time, added to the delays. Additionally, the Cocoa 3 framework's slow performance posed challenges that needed to be overcome. Lastly, due to the trilingual nature of the AI, some haikus in the dataset did not meet the PG-13 criteria and required manual removal.

Team Members and Roles

Our diverse team was composed of talented individuals who played different roles in the project. Isabella, the machine learning engineer and web developer, spearheaded the technical aspects. Jay, the product manager and web developer, brought his expertise in user experience and Project Management to ensure a smooth execution. Soham, the web developer and data scientist, contributed with his programming skills and analytical thinking. Annabelle, the data scientist and web developer, brought a unique combination of data expertise and design sensibilities. Owen, the data scientist, was the rock of our team, providing guidance and driving us to do more.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our haiku generator project allowed us to explore the fascinating realm of art created by AI. By harnessing the power of GPT2 and adhering to the traditional haiku format, we successfully developed a tool that generates engaging and enjoyable haikus. Throughout our journey, we faced challenges, learned from them, and grew as a team. The experience of witnessing a machine transform words into poetry was truly remarkable, and we hope our project sparks your creativity and appreciation for the intersection of technology and art.
