AI Hack 2021: A Unique Online Hackathon Experience

Welcome to AI Hack 2021, organized by Imperial College Data Science Society (ICDSS). This exciting 24-hour virtual hackathon brings together over 160 participants from universities around the world, representing various disciplines. As the Head of Operations for ICDSS, I would like to express my gratitude to all the participants for dedicating their valuable time to this event.

About AI Hack 2021

AI Hack 2021 provides a platform for participants to showcase their skills, collaborate with others, and solve real-world problems using data science and artificial intelligence. This event offers three challenging projects to choose from: the Boston Housing Data Set challenge, Cryptocurrency Modeling challenge, and Crop Yield Modeling challenge. Each project provides unique opportunities for exploration and innovation.

Hackathon Schedule

The hackathon follows a comprehensive schedule designed to ensure a smooth and productive experience for all participants. Day one starts with the opening address and the release of the hackathon materials, including data sets and Azure credits. Throughout the event, participants can engage in random games, such as Kahoot quizzes, and Seek guidance from mentors in dedicated mentor booths. Day two concludes with the submission deadline for code, reports, and presentation videos.

Thanking Sponsors and Collaborators

We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors and collaborators, whose support has made this hackathon possible. Shopee, our gigabyte sponsor, is a leading online shopping platform in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Brazil. Kaiko, a market data provider in the Blockchain-based digital assets space, offers valuable insights to institutional investors. Jane Street, a quantitative trading firm and liquidity provider, focuses on technology and collaborative problem-solving. Microsoft has kindly sponsored Azure credits to facilitate participants' data processing needs.

Health and Safety Guidelines

While participating in the hackathon, it is essential to prioritize health and safety. Remember to abandon the hackathon in case of any emergency. Stay hydrated and take regular breaks to prevent fatigue. Engaging in physical movements and stretches is encouraged to maintain an active and healthy mindset.

Challenge 1: Boston Housing Data Set

Problem Statement

The Boston Housing Data Set challenge revolves around analyzing the relationship between house prices and various factors using the provided data set. Participants are encouraged to explore different approaches to modeling and understanding the housing market in Boston. The challenge includes both regression and classification tasks, offering the opportunity to uncover valuable insights.

Sample Questions

  • What is the relationship between house prices and the explanatory variables?
  • How does the house price relate to Spatial data, such as longitude and Latitude?
  • Is there a causal relationship between nitrous oxide levels and the explanatory variables?

Challenge 2: Cryptocurrency Modeling

Problem Statement

In the Cryptocurrency Modeling challenge, participants will tackle one of the world's most critical challenges: modeling crop yields in the face of climate change. Utilizing data sources from the US government agriculture census program, satellite imagery, and weather data, participants are tasked with exploring different approaches to modeling crop fields. This challenge requires skills in data-driven methods, specifically utilizing pandas and geopandas for data manipulation and visualization.

Challenge 3: Crop Yield Modeling

Problem Statement

The Crop Yield Modeling challenge addresses the impact of climate change on global food security. Participants will utilize provided data sets, including the US government agriculture census program, satellite imagery, and weather data, to tackle the task of modeling crop yields. This challenge requires a deep understanding of Supervised learning or multiple instance learning. Skills in pandas, geopandas, and data frame merging will be essential for successful participation.

Team Registration and Names

We are thrilled with the enthusiastic response to team registration, and we appreciate the creativity behind the team names and pictures. Team names such as "Kind Squared Errors," "We Are Dance Student Ensemble," and "Mech Gang Defectors" showcase the vibrant energy and diversity of participants.

Prizes and Awards

At AI Hack 2021, we acknowledge the hard work and dedication of participants by offering exciting prizes. The top three teams for each challenge will receive DJI Tello drones, Raspberry Pi 4 devices, and vouchers/gift cards of their choice. We also provide the option for teams to choose a donation route, where the monetary prize will be donated to selected charities focusing on climate change and food security.

Social Media Challenge

Engaging in our social media challenge can bring additional rewards. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences, insights, and progress on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. By tagging us and showcasing their projects, participants have a chance to win £20.

Kahoot Quizzes

Throughout the hackathon, participants can enjoy interactive Kahoot quizzes testing their general data science knowledge. The top three participants in each quiz will receive Amazon vouchers worth up to £25.

Conclusion

AI Hack 2021 promises an exhilarating experience of innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration. We encourage all participants to make the most of this hackathon and create Meaningful solutions to the challenges at HAND. The ICDSS committee is available on Discord to answer any questions and provide support throughout the event. Have fun hacking!
