Introduction

Hey guys, it's Anthony Morganty from Mr. Photographer.com. Today, I want to talk about the new Super Resolution feature added to Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw. Many of You have been asking me how to use Super Resolution on images in Lightroom. While there's no easy way to directly send images from Lightroom to Adobe Camera Raw for Super Resolution, there is a workaround that I'll show you in this article.

What is Super Resolution?

Before we jump into the workaround, let's understand what Super Resolution is. Super Resolution is a feature that allows you to increase the resolution of an image by doubling its length and width. This essentially gives you a quadrupled resolution, making it extremely useful for images that have been heavily cropped or require higher Detail.

The Absence of Super Resolution in Lightroom

Adobe has announced that Super Resolution will be coming to Lightroom in the future, but as of now, it is not available. This has led many users to wonder how they can utilize Super Resolution on their images in Lightroom. Unfortunately, there is no direct option to open an image in Adobe Camera Raw from Lightroom to access Super Resolution. In the past, with older versions of Photoshop, it was possible to open a raw file directly into Adobe Camera Raw from Lightroom; however, this feature no longer exists.

The Workaround: Sending Images to Adobe Camera Raw

While there isn't a seamless solution, there is a workaround that allows you to send images from Lightroom to Adobe Camera Raw for Super Resolution. Follow the steps below to achieve this workaround:

Step 1: Show Image in Finder or File Explorer

To begin, right-click on the image you want to enhance with Super Resolution in Lightroom. On a Mac, select "Show in Finder," while on a PC, choose "Show in File Explorer" (or similar options depending on your operating system). This action will open a new window displaying the image file.

Step 2: Open the Image in Photoshop

In the Finder or File Explorer window, double-click on the image file to open it directly in Photoshop. If your computer is not set up to open images in Photoshop by default, you can manually open Photoshop and then drag the image into the program.

Step 3: Accessing Adobe Camera Raw

Once the image is open in Photoshop, it will automatically open in Adobe Camera Raw. This allows you to Apply Super Resolution and enhance the image's resolution. Unfortunately, if you right-click on the image, you won't find an option for Super Resolution in the menu.

Step 4: Enhancing the Image with Super Resolution

To access Super Resolution, double-click on the thumbnail of the image, as it is opened as a smart object in Adobe Camera Raw. This will bring up the Enhanced feature options. Click on "Enhance," and Adobe Camera Raw will Create a new DNG file with the enhanced resolution. The new image will be displayed in the left-HAND side panel.

Step 5: Saving and Importing the Enhanced Image in Lightroom

Click on "Done" to save the enhanced image. Close Photoshop as the image is now saved outside of Lightroom. Navigate back to the folder containing the original image in Lightroom's Library module. Right-click on the folder and select "Synchronize Folder." Lightroom will detect the newly enhanced image and add it to your catalog. You can now see the original image and the enhanced version side by side in the folder.

Conclusion

While the workaround for utilizing Super Resolution in Lightroom may not be perfect, it allows you to access this feature and enhance the resolution of your images. Hopefully, Adobe will introduce Super Resolution directly in Lightroom in the near future. Thank you for watching my videos, and I appreciate all of your support.
