Welcome to this webinar for applications on catalyzing equitable use of artificial intelligence to improve global health. In this webinar, we will provide all the information and guidelines you need to submit a strong application for the call for applications. We have one hour dedicated to this webinar, and we encourage all participants to ask questions and engage in discussions. This webinar is a joint effort by the Science for Africa Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Patrick J. McGavern Foundation.

The Science for Africa Foundation

The Science for Africa Foundation is a Pan-African nonprofit public charitable organization that aims to support, strengthen, and promote science and innovation on the African continent. Our vision is to be a leader in strengthening African science for a better future in a global world. We focus on discovery sciences, translational sciences, and implementation sciences in the thematic areas of health, climate, environment, and agriculture. Our mission also involves capacity building, supporting policies that are favorable to science, and fostering partnerships.

The Call for Applications

The call for applications aims to address the potential of artificial intelligence to transform Healthcare within the world. We are specifically Interested In AI solutions in global health that are locally driven and owned to ensure they meet the needs of the people they serve. We are looking for responsible global use of AI that is safe, equitable, transparent, reliable, and beneficial. The call is a joint effort by various Grand Challenges partners, including GC Brazil, GC Ethiopia, GC India, GC Sagal, GC South Africa, and GC Africa.

Eligibility and Evaluation

To be eligible for this call, applicants must demonstrate a good understanding of the demand and have conducted preliminary stakeholder analysis. The proposals should also leverage impact, provide rapid access to data, and establish a plan for engagement with local decision-makers. The evaluation of proposals will be based on challenge responsiveness and innovative approaches. The projects should have clear, achievable, and replicable methodologies and focus on short-term impact.

Application Process

The application process involves submitting a detailed proposal that outlines the project's objectives, methods, and expected outcomes. The proposal should clearly indicate the focus area and the large language model that will be used. Applicants should provide evidence of their expertise and experience in AI, as well as their ability to Scale and sustain the project. The budget should be reasonable and Align with the scope of work. The deadline for submissions is [deadline date].

Areas of Focus

Clinical Decision Support

AI Tools that improve diagnosis and provide clinical decision support to frontline health workers. These tools should enable the refinement and adherence to health guidelines, as well as the interpretation of diagnostics.

Population Health and Policy Making

AI tools that support policy makers in leveraging new insights from routinely available data sources. The tools should be able to distill information from complex evolving data sets and guide policy making in disease epidemics and progression.

Frontline Health Workers

Personalized Coaching and workflow management tools for frontline health workers. These tools should improve the quality and efficiency of service delivery and include AI-supported features.

Communications and Patient Journeys

AI tools for targeted communication, bridging language and literacy gaps, and providing tailored advice to patients. These tools should facilitate the understanding and management of health status, as well as improve the interoperability of health data systems.

Interoperability of Health Data Systems

AI models that help improve the interoperability of health data systems and programs. These models should focus on strengthening health systems and ensuring the efficient exchange of data.

Budget Guidelines and Funding Resources

The grant level for this call is $100,000 USD per project, with a maximum of [number of funded projects] projects to be funded. The budget should be commensurate with the scope of work and include personnel costs, travel costs, materials and consumables, equipment, subcontracting, research costs, and administrative costs. The Science for Africa Foundation will provide funding resources for selected projects.
