In this episode of Mod Mondays, we will be reviewing and installing the AI Box Light from One Car Stereo on a 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. The AI Box Light is a device that allows for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay experience. It is a simple plug-in device that comes with a sleek design and multiple vents for airflow. In this article, we will go over the unboxing, installation, and testing of the AI Box Light.

Unboxing the AI Box Light

The AI Box Light comes in a nice and simple packaging that is very lightweight. It includes an instruction manual, a scannable QR code, an additional product information card, and the AI Box Light itself. The device has a sleek design, is very small and light, and comes with a USB-A to USB-C slot. The box also comes with a one-foot USB-CA to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C adapter for downloading files onto the AI Box.

Installing the AI Box Light

Installing the AI Box Light is meant to be a simple plug-in process, so no additional tools are required. Simply grab the one-foot USB-CA to USB-C cable and plug it into the Android Auto/Apple CarPlay USB slot of your Tacoma. Then, remove the protective plastic film around the AI Box Light. The USB-C slot is located on the other end of the cord, and there are LED indicator lights showing that the box is turned on and working. Simply plug the cord into the USB-C slot and proceed with setting up the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi hotspot to connect the AI Box to your truck.

Setting up Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Hotspot

To connect the AI Box to your truck, you will need your cell phone with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi hotspot turned on. You only need to do this step once, and your box will automatically connect your phone, allowing for wireless Android Auto and Apple Play experience. Turn your truck on and follow the normal Prompts on your entertainment system, then hit the menu button and keep an eye on the projection tab. This should change to CarPlay when the box is fully connected. This will take a couple of seconds during the first time of install as the box is adjusting to the resolution of your entertainment system. You'll Notice that the far indicator light will Blink faster when the box is connected. Then, the screen should automatically change to the new interface. In the bottom left corner, you'll notice that the Bluetooth is grayed out, so let's go ahead and connect this to your phone. Click the Auto app and find this device on your phone's Bluetooth. Make sure that your Bluetooth is turned on and discoverable for this step, then head to your connected devices and pair in your device. I allowed access to my contacts and call history and pressed pair. Your screen should change to this while the parent process is ongoing. After that, it should take you to a familiar screen - your normal Android Auto screen from the factory or Apple Play if you're an Apple user will Show up. It will have all the same apps as previously had and will function the exact same way only wirelessly.

To use the Wi-Fi hotspot, simply go to your phone's hotspot and tethering, allow use of Wi-Fi hotspot, and click and connect to that Wi-Fi on your truck screen. You're going to have to input your password for the first time connection. As you can see, the Wi-Fi symbol is also lit up and ready to be used.

Testing the AI Box Light Apps

The AI Box Light comes with pre-loaded apps such as a date and weather app, YouTube, a video app for your downloaded videos, a music player, and Netflix. The date and weather app is simple to use - simply set your location, and your Current city should show up. Then, on the main screen, it should show you the weather in that location. YouTube looks just like how you have it on your phone or tablet but on a bigger screen. You can still access all your notifications, sign into your profile, access shorts, subscriptions, and your saved library. The video app is for your downloaded videos. If you want to save videos on a USB and play it on your entertainment system, you can do this with this app. For the music player, it's a similar concept to the video - save the music in your USB and play it here. Netflix is the main reason I wanted this product. Sign in and click your profile and navigate like normal. You have your movies, TV shows, and your personal lists. You can still hit pause, fast forward similar to how your phone is or your tablet acts, and there will be no lag on your truck speakers. You can also turn subtitles on if you want.
