Choosing the Right Blocks

For this project, we opted to use stack wall corners from Abbotsford Concrete Products. These stack wall corners, although not rectangular in Shape, fit together seamlessly to Create square columns. We chose the sandalwood color combination, which adds a touch of elegance to the overall aesthetic.

Preparing the Base

Electrical Work

To provide lighting for the columns, we needed to splice a new wire for the column lights. Using a ground-rated splicing kit, we made brass connections and used a heat shrink tube for waterproofing. A PVC tube with a right-angle fitting was positioned to protect the wire, and a drainage hole was drilled to prevent water buildup. The rock was then poured into the base.

Setting the First Layer of Block

With the base prepared and the electrical work done, it was time to start setting the first layer of block. We paid careful Attention to ensure everything was level and secure before proceeding to the next layer. The first layer acts as the foundation for the rest of the column.

Applying Construction Adhesive

To enhance the stability of the block layers, we applied Gorilla heavy-duty construction adhesive to the bottom of each block before setting them in place. We had to cut off the remnants of the PVC pipe used for creating a hole in the caps before applying construction adhesive and setting the caps in place.

Installing Column Lights

To illuminate the columns at night, column lights were installed. We first mounted an adapter to the cap and then marked the positions for drilling holes. Using a hammer drill, the holes were carefully drilled, and plastic anchors were inserted. The column lights were then installed using screws and pilot holes for added stability.

Testing the Lights

Once the column lights were installed, the wiring was done, and the light bulbs were inserted. We opted for LED filament bulbs, which provide energy efficiency without compromising on aesthetics. The lights were tested to ensure they were functioning properly.
