Illustrators and Artists I've Worked With: A Journey Through Creativity
In this video, I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on the talented illustrators and artists I have had the pleasure of working with throughout my career. These individuals have played a crucial role in bringing my ideas to life, whether it be through comics, animations, or other forms of visual art. From the early days of ASDF Movie to my latest projects, let's explore the diverse range of creativity that has Shaped my work.
1. The Origin of ASDF Movie
ASDF Movie, a series predominantly known for its animations, actually had its humble beginnings as a collection of emoticons that I drew back in the mid-90s. From there, it evolved into a comic series featuring around thirty strips. However, realizing my limitations as an illustrator, I eventually enlisted the help of other talented artists.
2. Illustrations in ASDF Movie
While ASDF Movie is primarily known for its animations, there have been a few instances where traditional illustrations have made an appearance. For example, my old school friend Marianne McLaughlin beautifully illustrated a horse that was featured in one of the episodes. Chloe Dunegate also contributed her artistic skills by creating a visually appealing chair and pony illustration. These illustrations added a touch of artistry to an otherwise animated series.
3. The Aster Movie Comics
Taking a step back to the comics, at one point, I decided to compile the thirty or so comics I had illustrated into an actual book. This is where my collaboration with Matt Lee, a talented illustrator and friend, began. Together, we transformed the comics into a physical manifestation of the Aster Movie series, bringing it back to its original roots. Matt Lee also created a stunning official poster for the series, showcasing his artistic prowess.
4. Artwork for T-Shirts and Stickers
In addition to the comics and illustrations, ASDF Movie also ventured into the realm of merchandise. T-shirts became a popular item, and Ben's Mormon, our very own animator, took up the task of designing several of them. From quirky illustrations to creative designs, Ben's artwork added a unique touch to our merchandise line. We also had the pleasure of working with other talented artists such as Edie Cool, Drew Wise, and Cowell Moray, who contributed their designs to ASDF Movie stickers. These stickers, though underappreciated, showcased a wide range of creative styles. Furthermore, we had the ASDF Movie characters reimagined in an anime style, thanks to the artistic contributions of Koval Sushi Collins and Lauren Skittles.
5. Artists in Crash Zoom
Moving on to another series I've been involved in, Crash Zoom, a project that incorporated the work of various artists. Jaunty Picking, Matt Lee, Katie Net, David Roy, and Kyle Labriola were just a few of the artists responsible for the background art in this series. The title cards, which are often a visual representation of the episode's theme, were skillfully created by artists like Hugo John Strand, Sophie Fletcher, Hailey West Nova, and Amelia Tyndall. Some episodes even had their own dedicated comics, with illustrations by Ben's Mormon and Sophie Fletcher. Dustbusters, a highly entertaining miniseries within the Crash Zoom Universe, also boasted impressive illustrations by Sophie Fletcher.
6. Artists in Eddsworld
Eddsworld, a fondly remembered series, saw collaborations with numerous talented artists. These individuals brought their unique styles to the comics and illustrations that accompanied the series. From port-of-order to Mark Levar, David Roy, Reilly McHale, Anthony Rees, John Wicks, Cal Ware, Chloe Dunegate, and Ben Smallman, their artwork breathed life into the Eddsworld universe. Maddie Vine, another skilled illustrator, contributed her talents to a book featuring illustrations from the series.
7. Artists in the Cat Attack Video Game
During my career, I had the opportunity to embark on a unique project: a video game called Cat Attack. This endeavor involved collaborating with Hayley West Nova, Kristin Devine, and Matt Freeth. Hayley West Nova and Kristin Devine lent their artistic skills to character designs, while Matt Freeth brought the game's pixel art to life. The game's logo was conceptualized by Ben Smallman and finalized by John T. Picking. The official icon for the App Store, created by Matt Leigh and Anthony Price, further showcased the game's aesthetics.
8. Illustrations for Christmas Book
Not limited to videos and animations, my creative Journey also led me to venture into children's books. One such project was a Christmas book that, although not entirely suitable for kids, was illustrated and turned into a motion graphics animation by a talented team. Davina spearheaded the book's illustrations, while Philip Rika and Christina handled the motion graphics animation. This collaboration with multiple artists brought the story to life in a visually captivating way.
9. Card Illustrations for Muffin Time
Muffin Time, a card game created by myself and my team, featured illustrations by Ben Smallman. The whimsical and humorous art brought the game's characters and concept to life. Ben also lent his creative talents to designing the box for the game. Additionally, a unique poster, exclusively for our enjoyment, was crafted by Matt Leigh.
