DIY #1: Creating a Farmhouse Sign with Wood Animals

Welcome back to Rustic and Lace DIY! In this DIY project, we will be creating a farmhouse sign using wood animals and decorative elements.

Materials Needed:

  • Waverly chalk paint in plaster
  • Waverly antique wax
  • Decals created with Cricut machine
  • Giant craft sticks from Walmart
  • Sign from Dollar Tree
  • Wood animals from Walmart or Michael's
  • Paint tape
  • Ruler and Pencil
  • Wood glue
  • Hot glue

Step 1: Removing Hangers and Connecting Signs Start by removing the hangers from the signs and laying them side by side. Use craft sticks and wood glue, along with hot glue, to connect them and create a single piece. This will serve as the base for the sign.

Step 2: Creating a Border and Painting with Chalk Paint Using a ruler and pencil, trace out lines about half an inch from the end of the sign all around to create a border. Apply paint tape along these lines. Paint the middle part of the sign with plaster chalk paint. Repeat the process for any additional signs.

Step 3: Applying Antique Wax and Adding Decals Once the paint is dry, remove the paint tape and apply antique wax all around the edges of the signs. This will give them a distressed look. Add decals created with a Cricut machine to the signs, placing them in desired positions.

Step 4: Gluing Animals and Adding Wood Glue and Hot Glue Using wood glue and hot glue, attach the wood animals to the signs. Apply the glue along the edges of the animals and press them firmly onto the signs. Ensure they are secure before proceeding.

Step 5: Adding Twine and Creating Finger Bows To further enhance the farmhouse theme, wrap twine around the neck of the animals and secure with hot glue. Create finger bows by wrapping twine around your fingers and tying them with knots. Attach one bow to each end of the sign using hot glue.

Step 6: Gluing Decorative Decals and Creating a Hanger Using wood glue and hot glue, attach additional decorative decals such as eggs, bacon, and milk next to the corresponding animals. This will add a playful touch to the sign. Finally, create a hanger by adding a braided jute cord and securing it with staples.

Step 7: Finishing Touches and Final Result Take a moment to check for any excess glue or imperfections and clean them up if necessary. Admire your completed farmhouse sign, which can be displayed in your kitchen or any other spot in your home. Enjoy the rustic charm it adds to your decor!

Pros:

  • Easy to follow instructions
  • Budget-friendly materials
  • Customizable with different decals and animals
  • Versatile for different room styles

Cons:

  • Requires basic crafting skills and tools
  • Glue may require additional drying time
