These active agents contribute to the task, communicate their creative intentions, and influence people's decision-making.

Introduction to Social Robots

Social robots have been previously studied in the Context of creativity, particularly in Zen rock gardens, children's idea generation, and figural creativity. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the role of social robots in adult creativity, specifically with physically embodied interactions. Therefore, our research questions focus on the impact of robots' social behaviors on human idea generation in creative tasks and the Perception and collaboration with social robots in such tasks.

Previous Research on Social Robots and Creativity

Prior research has shown that social robots can contribute to creative expressions. However, most of these studies have focused on specific contexts and lacked physical embodiment interactions. Our research aims to bridge this gap by examining the effects of embodied interactions with social robots on creativity in adult participants.

Research Questions and Methodology

To investigate the impact of social robot behaviors on creativity, we designed a platform for idea generation using tangram construction. Participants took turns with a robot in completing the task while the robot demonstrated both task-execution and social behaviors. We used the Kuri robot, programmed with specific behaviors and movements. The task was conducted on a digital canvas, with participants using a computer mouse to operate on the canvas.

Design of the Interactive System

In our interactive system, the robot displayed social behaviors in three scenarios. Firstly, it responded to people's operations on the canvas. Secondly, it expressed social behaviors upon completing a placement. Lastly, the robot tracked the user's placement and made eye contact to Show Attention to the human.

Formative Study on Social Robot Behaviors

Before conducting the main experiment, we conducted a formative study to validate and refine the social robot behaviors. The study involved evaluating the robot's emotions, human-likeness, attentiveness, interactivity, and more. Feedback from 98 participants helped us improve the behaviors and ensure their effectiveness in enhancing creativity.

Experimental Setup and Procedure

We conducted a preliminary evaluation with 12 participants to assess the impact of social robot behaviors on creativity. The study took place in the Human and Robot Partners Lab, and there were two conditions: social and non-social. Participants first watched a video introducing the task and the study process. They then engaged in the creation and categorization tasks, followed by a semi-structured interview and a post-experiment questionnaire.

Qualitative Findings

Our qualitative analysis revealed five major themes. Participants in both conditions expressed varying levels of acceptance of robot inputs. They attributed genders and personalities to the robot, and some viewed it as having its own ideas or plans. Participants also explored different means of communication with the robot, including verbal communication and playful interactions. However, opinions on the robot's contribution to the task were mixed, with some finding it helpful while others found it distracting or interfering.

Quantitative Results

Although our preliminary results did not yield significant findings for all hypotheses, participants in the social condition tended to accept the robot's inputs more, as indicated by their removal of the robot's placements. These findings suggest a potential influence of social robot behaviors on collaboration and human acceptance.

Human Behavioral Traits in Collaboration

Based on our qualitative and limited quantitative results, we identified four human behavioral traits that could indirectly contribute to or diminish creative thinking. Mutual understanding and playful interactions were also observed to play a role in enhancing creativity.

Limitations and Future Work

Additionally, a comparison between humans and robots as creative collaborators could provide further insights. Lastly, we plan to study the specific effects of social robots on individual human behavioral traits related to creativity.
