Building a Gaming PC on a Budget 💻🎮

Building a gaming PC doesn't have to break the bank. With the right combination of used and new parts, you can create a powerful gaming rig that delivers an incredible gaming experience without draining your wallet. In this article, we will explore how to build a budget-friendly gaming PC and discuss the components used in the process. We will also analyze the performance of the system and evaluate its value in today's gaming landscape.

The Components Used

3.1. CPU: Ryzen 7 5700x

The heart of our budget gaming PC is the Ryzen 7 5700x CPU. With its 8 cores and 16 Threads, this processor provides ample power for gaming and multitasking. It offers excellent performance, especially when paired with a capable GPU.

3.2. GPU: RTX 3070

To ensure smooth gameplay and stunning graphics, we opted for the RTX 3070 GPU. While the specific model used, the Inno3D RTX 3070, had some thermal throttling issues, we managed to mitigate them through undervolting. The overall performance of the GPU remained impressive, providing excellent frame rates in various games.

3.3. CPU Cooler: Snowman Mt 6s

Keeping the Ryzen 7 5700x cool is crucial, and the Snowman Mt 6s CPU cooler does an exceptional job in that regard. With this cooler, the CPU temperatures stayed around 60° under maximum load and maintained similar levels during gaming Sessions. Its efficient cooling capabilities ensure optimal performance and stability.

3.4. Case: Thermal T Divider

The choice of a case is not only for aesthetic appeal but also for proper ventilation and functionality. The Thermal T Divider case offers an excellent balance of style, affordability, and cooling capacity. With a price tag of around $60, it provides ample room for components and airflow to keep the system running smoothly.

3.5. Storage: SSD

When it comes to storage, reliability is key. While used storage components can be inconsistent, we decided to incorporate a new SSD into our budget build. For just $40, we obtained a 1TB M.2 SSD, ensuring Speedy and reliable storage for our gaming needs.

3.6. Memory: DDR4

For memory, we opted for a 32GB DDR4 kit. While we managed to find this kit at a good price in the used market, it's worth noting that DDR4 prices can be expensive, both new and used. However, the performance gains provided by DDR4 justify the investment, especially for gaming enthusiasts.

3.7. Power Supply: ThermalTake

A reliable power supply is essential to ensure stable operation and prevent any issues with the system's components. While some might be hesitant to use a used power supply, our experience has shown that with proper testing, used power supplies can offer fantastic value. The ThermalTake power supply we used, though unmarked, appears to be around 500W, which is sufficient for our build.

The Performance of the System

4.1. Gaming Performance

4.1.1. Fortnite

In our testing, the budget gaming PC showcased impressive performance in the popular Game Fortnite. With the undervolted Inno3D RTX 3070, we were able to maintain temperatures below 80°, avoiding thermal throttling and delivering consistent frame rates. The combination of the Ryzen 7 5700x CPU and the RTX 3070 GPU provided an exceptional gaming experience.

4.1.2. CS2

We also tested the system's performance in CS2, a recently released game. While the results were generally positive, with excellent frame rates and satisfactory 0.1% lows, we noticed some GPU utilization fluctuations. This issue might be related to game optimization and should be resolved in future updates. Overall, the performance was on par with more expensive systems.

4.1.3. Other Games

Beyond Fortnite and CS2, we tested the budget gaming PC in various other games available on Steam and the Epic Games Store. In all instances, the system delivered outstanding FPS and provided an enjoyable gaming experience. Even at 4K resolution, by adjusting in-game settings to a mix of medium and high, the performance remained smooth and impressive.

4.2. Power Consumption

One of the advantages of building a budget gaming PC is the potential for low power consumption. Our system, even with its budget power supply, showcased excellent power efficiency. During gaming sessions, the power consumption was comparable to more expensive systems, demonstrating that you don't need to compromise on performance while keeping energy consumption in check.

The Value of a Budget Gaming PC

The value proposition of a budget gaming PC has never been more evident. With careful selection of used and new components, it is possible to build a powerful gaming rig that offers exceptional performance at a fraction of the cost of high-end systems. This budget PC, with its Ryzen 7 5700x CPU, RTX 3070 GPU, and other carefully chosen components, provides an immersive gaming experience without the need to spend extravagantly.
