Upgrading the HP 8300 Elite: Turning it into a Powerful Gaming PC 👾

Welcome to my Channel! I'm Huan, and after my previous successful refurbishment project with an HP 8100 Elite, I was left impressed with HP's business computers. However, the separation from that PC had me feeling a bit nostalgic and even suffering from "technology withdrawal." To cope with my condition, I reluctantly decided to upgrade to a semi-system, the HP 8300 Elite. In today's project, we're going big. So, let's dive right in!

1. Introduction

In my previous project, I transformed the HP 8100 Elite into a smooth-running office computer. But it became evident that it couldn't satisfy the cravings of hardware enthusiasts. Therefore, this time, we're aiming to create a gaming machine or an advanced workstation. The HP 8300 Elite caught my attention due to its stability and solid build quality. With a slight increase in price compared to the 8100 Elite, this system offers a more updated platform, expanded connectivity options, and a significant boost in performance.

2. The Impression of HP Business Computers

HP's business computers have left a lasting impression on me. Their stable performance and robust build materials make them stand out in the market. While the exterior design of the 8300 Elite is similar to the 8100 Elite, it offers improved connectivity with an additional four USB 3.0 ports. The 8300 Elite also benefits from an updated platform, supporting Ivy Bridge processors like the powerful i7-3770. With a maximum memory capacity of 32GB, the 8300 Elite provides more room for multitasking and advanced applications.

3. The Upgrade Plan for the HP 8300 Elite

To turn the HP 8300 Elite into a capable gaming PC, it's important to carefully choose the right components. We'll start with the CPU and select a high-performance option. The Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 fits the bill perfectly. Although originally released as an i7 processor, the Xeon E3-1230 V2 offers a similar performance at a more affordable price point.

4. The Specifications of the HP 8300 Elite

Before diving into the upgrade process, let's take a closer look at the HP 8300 Elite specifications. The exterior design remains largely unchanged, with four USB 2.0 ports on the front panel and an improved I/O section at the rear, featuring four USB 3.0 ports. With a third-generation Intel platform and support for processors like the Xeon E3-1230 V2, the 8300 Elite boasts enhanced expandability and improved performance. Furthermore, the memory capacity has been upgraded from 16GB to an impressive 32GB.

5. Choosing the CPU - Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2

To ensure a powerful and efficient gaming experience, we've selected the Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 as our CPU of choice for the upgrade. With its impressive performance and affordable pricing, this CPU is known for its exceptional value. Its prowess can rival that of the i7 processors from the same generation. Whether it's gaming or light video editing, the Xeon E3-1230 V2 has the capability to handle it all.

6. Utilizing 32GB DDR3 Memory

Memory plays a crucial role in the performance of a gaming PC. In this upgrade, we're going all out by installing four DDR3 8GB memory sticks, maximizing the usage of the available memory slots. With a total of 32GB, this memory configuration allows for smooth multitasking and provides headroom for more demanding tasks, such as 4K video editing.

7. The Graphics Card - Zotac GeForce GTX 1650 Low Profile

The choice of graphics card is essential for achieving the desired gaming performance. In our case, we needed a compact card that could fit within the small form factor of the HP 8300 Elite while still delivering excellent gaming capabilities. The Zotac GeForce GTX 1650 Low Profile with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM emerged as the ideal choice. It offers the best performance among half-Height cards and ensures a smooth gaming experience. With its robust heat sink and dual 4cm fans, this card guarantees stable performance and can handle multiple displays with its HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI outputs.

8. Installing a Killer Wi-Fi 6E Network Card

While the HP 8300 Elite comes with an RJ45 Ethernet port for wired internet connectivity, we decided to enhance its networking capabilities with a wireless network card. The Killer 1675x, based on Intel's AX210 chipset, supports Wi-Fi 6E with 2x2 antenna configuration and can deliver blazing-fast speeds of up to 2.4Gbps on the 5GHz band. By adding this card, the HP 8300 Elite gains top-notch wireless capabilities, surpassing even the performance of many modern motherboards' wired connections.

9. Storage Options - M.2 SSD vs. 2.5-inch SSD

Due to the limited PCIe slots, our original plan of utilizing an NVMe SSD through a PCIe to M.2 adapter couldn't be implemented. Instead, we turned to a 2.5-inch SSD for storage. Although it may not offer the same speed as an NVMe SSD, it is more than sufficient for gaming purposes. The absence of an M.2 slot is a minor setback, but the overall performance of the system remains excellent.

10. Performance Testing: Gaming and Video Editing

Now, let's delve into the exciting part of this upgrade – testing the system's performance in gaming and video editing scenarios. We tested various games, including Euro Truck Simulator 2, GTA V, APEX Legends, PUBG, The Witcher 3, and Monster Hunter: World, all at 1080p resolution with high graphics settings. Surprisingly, the HP 8300 Elite handled these games admirably, offering smooth gameplay experiences without sacrificing visual quality. Additionally, we tested video editing capabilities by previewing and rendering 4K footage. While the CPU performance showed some limitations during the editing process, the dedicated GPU provided hardware acceleration and significantly reduced rendering times.

11. Conclusion

In conclusion, the HP 8300 Elite has proven its worth as a capable gaming PC, even after eight years of its initial release. With careful component selection and upgrades, we were able to create a machine that exceeds expectations without breaking the bank. HP's business computers impress with their stability, expandability, and the freedom to customize according to individual needs. So, if you're considering building a gaming PC, don't overlook the potential of refurbished systems like the HP 8300 Elite.
