To follow along with this tutorial, you will need to download a free stock photo. Simply click the provided link in the description of the video and select the medium option when prompted. We will be removing the background from this photo, adding the drip effect, and creating a captivating background.

Let's dive right in!

Understanding the Drip Portrait Effect

The drip portrait effect involves adding drips to a portrait photo, creating a striking visual that combines elements of realism and creativity. By carefully outlining the subject and utilizing the paths tool, you can achieve precise background removal and an accurate representation of the portrait.

In this tutorial, we will be working with a pre-made path for the drip effect. However, I will demonstrate how to create a custom drip effect using the guide and paths tools. This allows you to personalize your design Based on your preferences.

Additionally, we will enhance the overall look of the portrait photo by adjusting the levels and curves, as well as applying a cartoon effect. Finally, we'll add a dynamic background using shapes, strokes, and gradients to complement the drip effect.

By the end of this tutorial, you'll have the skills to create stunning drip portrait effects in GIMP. Let's get started!

Getting Started with GIMP

To begin, open the original photo in GIMP by going to File > Open. Ensure that the photo is converted to GIMP's native built-in sRGB color space if prompted.

Next, we will Outline the entire subject using the paths tool. While this method takes more time, it provides precise background removal. Carefully outline the areas of the portrait you want to keep, creating a path. Convert the path to a selection area by clicking "Selection from Path" and then invert the selection by pressing Ctrl+i.

Now, navigate to the layers tab, right-click on the image layer, and select "Add Alpha Channel." Finally, press the delete key to remove the background from the photo.

Removing the Background

With the background removed, it's time to create a new composition for our drip effect. Go to File > New and adjust the Dimensions to 1080 by 1920. You can fill the composition with white for now. Drag the photo with the removed background onto the new composition. Rename this layer to "Portrait."

Use the rotate tool (shift+r) to straighten the body of the subject if necessary. Aim for a relatively straight position, and click "rotate" to Apply the transformation.

Creating a New Composition

Now, let's add the drip effect to the portrait. If you prefer to create a custom drip effect, you can follow the steps outlined in the tutorial. Alternatively, you can download the pre-made drip effect path from my website and import it into GIMP.

To import the path, right-click on the paths tab and select "Import Path." Locate the drip path file on your computer and open it. Position the drip effect around the subject by using the Scale tool (shift+t) and the move tool (shift+t). Make sure the path wraps around the entire person.

Once the drip effect is in place, convert it to a layer mask. Right-click on the path in the paths tab and click "Convert Path to Selection." Then, right-click on the portrait layer in the layers tab and choose "Add Layer Mask." Initialize the layer mask to "Selection" and click "Add."

Adding the Drip Effect

Now that the drip effect is applied, you can hide the background layer and go to Layer > New from Visible. This creates a new layer containing just the drip portrait. You can then crop this layer to the content by going to Layer > Crop to Content.

Align the drip portrait to the center of the composition using the alignment tool. Simply click on the layer and enable the alignment tool in the move tool group.

Tweaking the Portrait Photo

To enhance the portrait photo, you can adjust the levels and curves. Go to Colors > Levels and make adjustments to brighten or darken the photo. You can also fine-tune the midtones. Next, go to Colors > Curves and make additional adjustments to create the desired look.

For a more Stylized effect, you can apply a cartoon effect to the portrait. Press the forward slash key ("/") on your keyboard to bring up the search actions box. Type "Cartoon" and apply the Cartoon GEGL filter. Experiment with the settings to achieve the desired effect.

Adding a Dynamic Background

To complete the drip portrait, it's important to add a dynamic background. We'll start by adding a circle behind the portrait. Create a new layer and name it "circle." Use the ellipse select tool while holding ctrl and shift to drag out a perfect circle. Fill it with a color of your choice and stroke the edge of the circle for added definition.

Next, apply a gradient to the background layer. Change the foreground and background colors to create the desired gradient effect. Use the gradient tool while holding ctrl and dragging to apply the gradient to the background.

And there you have it! You've successfully created a captivating drip portrait effect using GIMP. Feel free to experiment and add your unique Flair to make the design truly your own.
