What Enterprise AI Deployment Really Involves
Every enterprise wants to know the impact of AI on their current workflows. Since the rise of ChatGPT a year ago, there’s been a surge in products claiming AI capabilities. Some of these products aren’t even genuinely using AI; they just use the term for marketing purposes. A form of “AI-washing”. And many are just “thin-wrappers” around LLMs. However, there’s one thing that all of these new AI products have in common: They’re often not secure enough for enterprise use - especially if they rely on public, cloud-based LLMs (like GPT, for example). So, the real concern for enterprises is around security. Now, we’re at a point where many in the C-suite know that an LLM (Large Language Model) is the brain behind generative AI. They’re becoming more aware of what Gen AI is good at and equally not good at. In fact, I recently talked to an executive who’s been experimenting with ChatGPT and generating imagery with AI. Despite his non-tech background, his knowledge was impressive. So, teams (whether technical or non-technical) are now focused on actual deployment strategies, and their security posture. Public, cloud-based LLMs (like GPT-3.5 or GPT-4) could expose proprietary content to the cloud. So, most enterprises currently block any interaction with cloud-based LLMs for that reason. The only way for enterprise organizations, especially in regulated sectors, to use LLMs and AI technologies is if they can be hosted in a private cloud or on-premise. These are fully locked down behind the firewall. As of last week, there are over 413,138 LLMs (ref: Huggingface) available. Many are extremely capable, have appropriate licensing, and rival the performance of the best public cloud offerings. Large enterprises are already experimenting with these LLMs behind their firewall. Likewise, @VisibleThread will integrate fully locked-down 'specialized' LLMs as part of our products in 2024. This makes them safe to use for organizations that are security-conscious. And CISOs (Chief Information Security Officers) will increasingly mandate that when onboarding products containing Gen AI. What are your primary concerns when it comes to integrating AI?
