💡 Highlights

  • AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) has been a highly anticipated feature for many budget graphics card users.
  • The Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, a popular super budget graphics card, has limitations when it comes to running modern titles in 1080p.
  • FSR can improve gameplay experience on the GT 1030 when running at lower resolutions such as 720p.
  • FSR provides a significant boost in frames per Second (FPS) but sacrifices some picture quality.
  • While FSR doesn't make 1080p gaming on the GT 1030 ideal, it opens up opportunities for playing a wider range of games.

🖥️ Introduction

🔍 AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR)

AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a highly advanced upscaling technology designed to improve gaming performance by dynamically increasing the frame rate. This feature allows gamers with lower-end graphics cards to play modern titles at higher resolutions without sacrificing too much on the graphics quality.

FSR leverages advanced algorithms to upscale lower-resolution images and make them appear as if they were rendered at a higher resolution. This technology is supported by a wide range of GPUs, including Nvidia's 10, 20, and 30 series graphics cards, making it accessible to a broader audience.

With FSR, gamers can enjoy smoother gameplay, reduced input lag, and better overall performance, even on lower-end hardware. The technology is constantly evolving, with more games being added to its library, providing users with a growing selection of titles to choose from.

🎮 Nvidia GeForce GT 1030: A Super Budget Graphics Card

The Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 has been one of the go-to choices for budget-conscious builders and gamers, especially during the recent GPU crisis when higher-end cards were hard to come by. Despite its affordability, this graphics card packs a decent punch for its price range.

The MSI GT 1030 2GB Aero ITX is one of the popular variants of the GT 1030. It features a dual-slot, air-cooled design with no additional power cables required, making it a perfect fit for upgrading older pre-built office machines into gaming rigs. With a current price of around 80 pounds, it offers a relatively powerful gaming experience for under 100 pounds.

The GT 1030 boasts 2GB of GDDR5 memory, a base clock speed of 1265MHz, and a boost clock speed of 1518MHz. While it may not be designed for high-end gaming, it can hold its own in indie and older titles.

⚙️ The Limitations of the GT 1030

Despite its affordability and popularity, the Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 does have its limitations when it comes to running modern, graphics-intensive games. The card's lower computational power and limited memory capacity make it struggle with handling more demanding titles, especially at higher resolutions.

While the GT 1030 performs reasonably well in older and less demanding games, it falls short when it comes to running AAA titles or graphically intensive gameplay. Gamers who rely on the GT 1030 as their primary graphics card often face gameplay limitations, including lower frame rates, reduced graphical fidelity, and occasional stuttering.

However, given its availability and relatively low price compared to higher-end alternatives, the GT 1030 remains a viable option for budget-conscious gamers who are willing to sacrifice some gaming performance for affordability.

🧪 Testing FSR on the GT 1030

To assess the capabilities of AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution on the Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, we conducted several tests using the Game Terminator Resistance. While the FSR library is still expanding, this game provided us with a benchmark to compare with previous tests.

When starting the tests, we ran the game at low settings and 1080p resolution without FSR enabled. This served as our baseline for comparison. The GT 1030 struggled to deliver satisfactory performance, with frame rates hovering around the 20-22 frames per second range.

Moving outside into well-lit areas, the frame rate further dropped to around 15 frames per second. The gameplay was not smooth, and image quality suffered.

We then enabled FSR in the performance mode and witnessed a significant improvement in frame rates. The frame rate jumped to around 31 frames per second, providing a more playable experience. However, this increase came at the cost of reduced picture quality, especially noticeable in elements like railings and distant objects.

While FSR did improve the frame rates at 1080p, the overall gameplay experience on the GT 1030 was still subpar due to the need to play at the lowest settings. However, FSR allowed the GT 1030 to perform better at lower resolutions such as 720p.
