Resizing AI Generated Images for Printing

In today's digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the way we Create and manipulate images. With AI, we can generate stunning visual content with intricate details and textures. However, when it comes to printing these AI-generated images, we often face the challenge of resizing them without compromising on quality.

In this article, we will explore different techniques and tools to resize AI-generated images for printing. We will start by discussing the options available in Mid Journey, an AI platform, for upscaling images. Then, we will Delve into the process of resizing using popular tools like Adobe Photoshop, Topaz Gigapixel AI, and ON1 Photo RAW. Finally, we will compare the results and help You choose the best method for resizing your images.

AI Generated Images

Before we dive into the resizing process, let's first understand the options available in Mid Journey for upscaling AI-generated images. Mid Journey offers a variety of upscaling options, presented as a GRID of four choices. These options provide different degrees of enlargement for the image.

However, it's important to note that as of now, Mid Journey is still in beta, and these options may change in the future. The AI models used by Mid Journey may be updated or refined, affecting the quality and appearance of the image.

Resizing Options in Mid Journey

When you request an AI-generated image in Mid Journey, you are presented with a grid of four upscaling options. From these options, you can choose your preferred enlargement. For the purpose of this demonstration, we have selected the bottom right HAND option.

After selecting the desired option, Mid Journey upscales the image, providing a pixel resolution of 1024 by 1024. However, if you wish to further upscale the image, you can select the "upscale to the max" option, which produces a file measuring 1664 pixels by 1664.

Recently, Mid Journey introduced a new feature called "beta upscale redo." Choosing this option generates an even larger file, measuring 2048 pixels on each side. It's worth noting that the beta upscale redo also ALTERS the appearance of the image, smoothening out textures and adding a cleaner look.

Determining Image Size for Printing

Once we have the upscaled image, it's crucial to understand how large we can print it without sacrificing quality. Luckily, there are online services available that allow us to determine the optimal printing size Based on the pixel Dimensions of the image.

By entering the pixel dimensions, these services provide a Chart that suggests the maximum print size for the best quality. For our 1664 pixel square image, the recommended maximum print size is 5 inches by 5 inches. However, if you are willing to compromise on quality, you can print it as large as 12 inches by 12 inches.

If you opt for the beta upscale redo option and have a 2048 pixel square image, you can print it up to 16 inches by 16 inches while maintaining good quality. But what if you need to print an image that is around 12 inches square? In that case, you will require a resolution of 3600 square pixels.

Now that we understand the limitations and possibilities of upscaled images, let's explore the different tools available for resizing and preserving the details during the enlargement process.
