The NUC 9 "Ghost Canyon": A Compact and Powerful PC

💻

The world of personal computers has seen a significant shift towards smaller form factors, and the Intel NUC 9 "Ghost Canyon" stands out as one of the most intriguing products in this space. With a mere 5L of space, it can accommodate high-end components like an i9-level CPU and a desktop version of the RTX 2070 graphics card. This makes it one of the smallest yet powerful mini PCs available in the market. What sets the NUC 9 apart from its predecessors is its upgradability. Not only can the graphics card be upgraded, but the memory and storage options are also changeable. This flexibility has left many Mac users envious, as they often have limited upgrade options. The NUC 9's impressive specs and compact design have caught the attention of tech enthusiasts, including myself. With our recent move to a new place, it became evident that transporting our bulky desktop was not convenient. Hence, we turned to the NUC 9 as an ideal solution—a small, powerful, and portable machine. Let's delve into the details and explore its features, performance, and overall value for users.

Unboxing and Review of the NUC 9

🎁

Upon receiving the NUC 9, the first impression was its small and sleek design. Compared to its predecessors, the NUC 9 has a significantly larger footprint. The entire body is made of metal, with mesh panels on the sides, not only indicating its powerful hardware but also providing ample airflow for cooling. The Dimensions of the machine measure 23 x 9.5 x 21cm, roughly the size of a few bottles of cola. With a weight of 3.8kg (including the graphics card), it is light and easy to carry around. The NUC 9 boasts straightforward disassembly, similar to cleaning a laptop. By unscrewing the two screws on the top of the chassis, we can access the internals. There, we find two 80mm fans, connected by touchpoints, efficiently cooling the CPU and chipset. Adjacent to them are the memory slots and storage options. This "compute element" can be understood as a traditional motherboard in a compact form factor. The core module of the entire machine is only the size of a Palm. Intel refers to this module as the "compute element," an innovative and semi-open standard. Aside from reducing the overall size, the primary advantage is the ease of future upgrades, avoiding the awkward situation of needing to change the socket when upgrading the CPU—a challenge well-known to enthusiasts. Despite its small size, NUC 9 does not compromise on I/O interfaces. It features advanced connectivity options such as a 3.5mm audio jack, six USB-A ports, an SD card slot, two Ethernet ports, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Additionally, there are two PCI-E slots beside the compute element, one of which is a full-speed PCI-E x16 slot. Intel seems to be aware that NUC buyers would most likely invest in a dedicated graphics card. Thus, they have thoughtfully included an 8-Pin power cable for the graphics card, eliminating the hassle of cable management. At the bottom of the machine, there is a custom 500W 1U platinum power supply unit by FSP, which is quite a luxurious choice for such a small-sized PC. Overall, the NUC 9's unboxing experience showcases its compact design, easy upgradability, and comprehensive range of I/O ports.

Performance and Benchmarks

⚙️

When it comes to performance, the NUC 9 exceeds expectations. The model we purchased houses a derivative of the Xeon processor called "Quartz Canyon," which differentiates it from the "Ghost Canyon" variant solely by the absence of the skull logo on the chassis. Instead of an i9 CPU with unlocked multiplier, the NUC 9 comes with a Xeon E2286M, an 8-core 16-thread BGA-packaged mobile U-series processor. It has a maximum single-core turbo frequency of 5GHz and an all-core turbo frequency of 4.2GHz. In addition, it supports ECC memory, although we opted for 2x8GB of non-ECC RAM with a frequency of 2666MHz, considering the limited advantage of ECC RAM in our daily usage. For storage, we chose the 1TB version of the Western Digital SN550 NVMe SSD. Due to size constraints, the highest graphics card that could fit was the RTX 2070. In terms of productivity and video editing tests, the NUC 9 delivered impressive results. Importing and editing an 8.5-minute H.265 4K 60fps footage in Premiere Pro took just over 6 minutes. This was significantly faster than our video editing instructor's iMac, which took more than 11 minutes for the same task. As for gaming performance, the NUC 9 proved its prowess by running demanding titles like "Assassin's Creed Odyssey," "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," and "Rainbow Six Siege" with ease. Even the demanding ray-traced version of "Minecraft" that struggled to achieve 15fps on the Surface Book 3 managed to run smoothly on the NUC 9. These benchmarks reflect the NUC 9's unbeatable performance within its compact size.
