Testing the Raiden RX 5700 XT in Allen Wake 2

Hello guys, welcome back to another video! In this one, I am going to be testing the performance of the Raiden RX 5700 XT in Allen Wake 2. This test is conducted after the latest patch, which supposedly improved performance for this GPU. We will also compare it with the Pascal series GPUs from Nvidia, specifically the 10 Series.

With this test, I am using the sapphire pulse edition of the card and the latest available AMD drivers. I have not manually overclocked it as I want to evaluate its performance in its default state. The specifications of the card can be seen in Techpowerup's GPU Z. It is running on PCI Express 3.0 x16, which won't significantly affect its performance. The GPU is paired with a Ryzen 7 5700 G processor and 16 GB of RAM.

Let's dive into the test by first discussing the settings. I started with a native resolution of 1080p and the lowest settings, as it is a common approach for testing GPUs in Allen Wake 2. The game lacks mesh shaders, which are crucial for smooth gameplay. Previously, GPUs like the GTX 1080 TI struggled with this title, averaging around 15-25 FPS with these settings. However, the latest patch has improved their performance to a playable level. Unfortunately, the 5700 XT is experiencing significant stuttering, which was not observed with the GTX 1080 TI. While the average FPS is comparable to the GTX 1080 TI, the 1% lows are disappointing. This level of inconsistency makes the gameplay unplayable, despite meeting the minimum requirements.

Moving on, I decided to test the game using FSR 2 on quality settings, which internally renders the game at 720p and upscales it to 1080p. Although the FPS slightly improved, the stuttering issues persisted. It seems that the patch failed to address the underlying problem, making the 5700 XT's performance rough in Allen Wake 2.

Interestingly, some comments have suggested that the game runs better on AMD GPUs using Linux. While I am not familiar with Linux, it might be worth considering if you are interested in playing this game on AMD hardware.

To further investigate the issue, I decided to install the 5700 XT on a different PC. This time, the card is paired with a Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor, which is a bit overkill, but I wanted to rule out any limitations from the previous setup's PCI Express 3.0 configuration. Despite the change, the performance remains the same, with noticeable stuttering throughout the gameplay.

In a last-ditch effort to salvage the experience, I decided to lock the FPS to 30 using Rivatuner Statistics Server. Surprisingly, this simple adjustment eliminated the stuttering issues completely. If you are using a 5700 XT and experiencing significant stuttering, I highly recommend locking the FPS to ensure a smoother gaming experience. Although it may not meet everyone's expectations, it provides a workable solution for enjoying the title.

In conclusion, the performance of the 5700 XT in Allen Wake 2 is disappointing. The game requires new technologies that the GPU does not possess, resulting in subpar performance and stuttering issues. However, by locking the FPS to 30, you can overcome the stuttering problems and enjoy a playable experience.
