Introduction

Hey guys, this is Patrick from STH today. In this article, we're going to explore the features and specifications of the Tie-In Transport SX TS65B8253 server. This dual AMD EPYC 7002 server, part of the Roam series, is designed for the storage market and comes with PCIe Gen4 support. It offers a unique combination of storage capabilities and PCIe connectivity. In this article, we will take a detailed look at the hardware overview, power supplies, expansion options, connectivity, management, performance, and power consumption. Let's dive in and see what makes this server a compelling option for storage applications.

Hardware Overview

Front of the System

The front of the Tie-In Transport server features two USB ports and LED status lights. It also includes a removable drive plane backplane, offering flexibility in storage configurations. The system supports 12 three-and-a-half-inch drive bays, with each bay capable of accommodating a traditional hard drive and a SATA hard drive. What's notable is that four of these drive bays can be used for NVMe SSDs, providing high-performance storage options.

Drive Configuration

The Tie-In Transport server offers a unique drive configuration with its removable backplane. This feature allows for easy customization and serviceability. The system can be set up to support 12 SATA bays without the need for an HBA or RAID controller, saving costs and simplifying storage configurations. Additionally, four of the drive bays can be utilized for NVMe SSDs, offering exceptional performance.

Fan Partition

The system comes with three chassis fans, which may seem limited compared to other similar servers. However, the all-metal design of the fan holders ensures durability and efficient airflow management. The hot-swappable power connectors of the fans make maintenance hassle-free. While cooling may be slightly limited with three fans, it is adequate for most storage applications.

Power Distribution Board

The Tie-In Transport server employs a power distribution board that connects two redundant 1200-watt power supplies. This setup allows for efficient power distribution to all major system components. Unlike some other servers, which connect power supplies directly to the motherboard, this design offers more standardization with the use of an ATX-style motherboard.

CPU Sockets and Memory

One of the standout features of this server is its two AMD EPYC CPU sockets. These SP3 sockets can accommodate AMD EPYC 7002 Rome series processors, with an upgrade to the EPYC 7003 series expected in the future. The system supports up to 240-watt TDP CPUs, offering a range of options, including high-core count processors. With eight DDR4-3200 DIMM slots per CPU socket, the server can handle a total of 16 DIMM slots, allowing for a maximum memory capacity of up to four terabytes. The eight-Channel memory configuration of AMD EPYC CPUs provides ample memory bandwidth, contributing to excellent storage performance.
