Introduction

Welcome back to Loki's Tech! In this session, we will be diving into a comprehensive review of the AMD Ryzen 5600G APU. Specifically, we will be analyzing the impact of RAM speed on the APU's performance and also examining its performance with a discrete GPU, the RTX 3080Ti. RAM speed plays a crucial role in the overall performance of a system, so let's get started with the benchmarking.

RAM Speed Comparison for the 5600G APU

To evaluate the impact of RAM speed on the 5600G APU, we conducted a series of tests using different RAM configurations. For these tests, we used the default XMP profile of Kingston Hyper X Fury RAM, which offers three different speed options: 3600MHz, 3200MHz, and 2666MHz.

APU Test: Klee at 1080P Medium Setting

Our first APU test involved running the Game Klee at 1080P medium settings. The results showed that the use of higher RAM speeds resulted in significant performance improvements. The APU performed approximately 11% better with 3200MHz RAM compared to 2666MHz, and about 15% better with 3600MHz RAM. Interestingly, the 1% low remained consistent across all RAM configurations.

APU Test: Dota 2 at 1080P Best Looking

Next, we moved on to testing the APU's performance in Dota 2 at 1080P best looking settings. Similar to the previous test, we observed notable improvements in performance with higher RAM speeds. The APU delivered around 8% higher frame rates with 3200MHz RAM compared to 2666MHz, while 3600MHz RAM provided an improvement of approximately 12%.

APU Test: Shadow of Tomb Raider at 1080P Lowest Setting

For the third APU test, we focused on Shadow of Tomb Raider at 1080P lowest settings. Once again, we found that higher RAM speeds positively influenced the APU's performance. The use of 3200MHz RAM resulted in nearly 14% higher frame rates compared to 2666MHz RAM, and 3600MHz RAM delivered an improvement of around 17%.

APU Test: Witcher 3 at Medium Setting

The last game we tested with the APU was Witcher 3 at medium settings. Both 3200MHz and 3600MHz RAM configurations showcased approximately 12.5% better performance than the 2666MHz RAM configuration. These findings highlight the importance of considering RAM speed when aiming for optimal performance in gaming.

Benchmarking with RTX 3080Ti

Before proceeding with the benchmark tests using the RTX 3080Ti, we ensured that there were no recent Windows updates that could impact the results. We wanted to provide fair and accurate benchmark data.

RTX 3080Ti Test: Forza Horizon at 1080P Ultra Setting

Firstly, we tested the APU's performance with the RTX 3080Ti in Forza Horizon at 1080P ultra settings. Similar to the APU tests, we observed improvements in frame rates with higher RAM speeds. 3200MHz RAM performed approximately 4.6% better than 2666MHz RAM, while 3600MHz RAM offered an improvement of around 6.6%.

RTX 3080Ti Test: Shadow of Tomb Raider at 1080P Highest Setting

Moving on to Shadow of Tomb Raider at 1080P highest settings, we once again witnessed the impact of RAM speed on performance. With 3200MHz RAM, the APU delivered about 9.6% higher frame rates compared to 2666MHz RAM. Additionally, the use of 3600MHz RAM resulted in an improvement of almost 13%.

RTX 3080Ti Test: Horizon Zero Dawn at 1080P Ultra Setting

Our final benchmark test involved running Horizon Zero Dawn at 1080P ultra settings. Just like the other games, we found that higher RAM speeds translated into better performance. The APU performed approximately 6.6% better with 3200MHz RAM compared to 2666MHz RAM, and about 10.7% better with 3600MHz RAM.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our extensive testing of the AMD Ryzen 5600G APU has demonstrated the significant impact of RAM speed on its overall performance. Whether used solely with the APU or in conjunction with a powerful discrete GPU like the RTX 3080Ti, higher RAM speeds consistently delivered improved frame rates.

While it is possible to achieve even better performance by manually tuning the RAM timing, it is important to consider the price-performance ratio. Going from 3600MHz to speeds above 4000MHz can result in a price increase of 50% or more. On the other HAND, the difference between 3600MHz and 3200MHz or 2666MHz is relatively small. Therefore, we believe that 3600MHz offers the best balance between performance and cost when purchasing RAM.

FAQ

Q: Does overclocking the RAM improve performance even further? A: Yes, overclocking the RAM can potentially improve performance beyond the tested speeds. However, it is essential to keep in mind that manually overclocking RAM may void the warranty and requires advanced technical knowledge.

Q: Are there any compatibility issues with using higher-speed RAM on the 5600G APU? A: The 5600G APU is compatible with various RAM speeds, including higher-speed modules. However, it is recommended to consult your motherboard's specifications and compatibility list to ensure optimal performance.

Q: Can I achieve similar performance gains with other APUs? A: While the specific performance gains may vary, higher RAM speeds tend to have a similar positive impact on most APUs. It is advisable to research the particular APU model and consult benchmark results for accurate expectations.

Q: Is it worth investing in higher-speed RAM for non-gaming tasks? A: Higher-speed RAM can provide performance benefits in tasks that are memory-intensive, such as video editing or rendering. However, the extent of improvement may vary depending on the specific application. Consider your intended usage before making a decision.

Q: What is the difference between CL17 and CL18 timings? A: CAS latency (CL) represents the delay between issuing a memory request and the actual response. A lower CL value indicates faster response times. Therefore, CL17 is generally considered better than CL18 in terms of overall performance.
