Five months ago, I released my first ever benchmarking video featuring the AMD Ryzen 3800X. To my surprise, it quickly became the most viewed video on my Channel. Thank you for the support! Now, I've decided to upgrade to the new and improved AMD Ryzen 5800X. But the question that lingers is, was it worth the upgrade? Let's dive into the performance tests and find out.

Testing Conditions

To ensure accurate and reliable performance comparisons, I ran a wide variety of benchmarks using both CPUs at 1440p and 1080p resolutions with ultra settings. It's worth noting that while the frame rates may seem lower than expected, it's important to consider that most gamers don't play at ultra settings. As the settings are lowered, the FPS will increase accordingly. Now, let's take a look at the hardware setup for these tests.

Fortnite Performance Comparison

🎮 Fortnite: A Hardcore Gamer's Dream

To kick things off, let's dive into everybody's favorite Game, Fortnite. We'll first examine the performance of the AMD Ryzen 3800X at 1080p with the epic in-game settings preset. Surprisingly, we achieved an average frame rate of 167 FPS, which is quite impressive. However, for those competitive shooters out there aiming for even higher FPS, tweaking the settings to lower levels could significantly boost the frame rate.

Now, switching over to the AMD Ryzen 5800X with the same settings, we witness a substantial performance increase. At 1080p, we're looking at an average frame rate of 227 FPS. Moreover, lowering the settings further would result in even higher FPS, questioning the practicality of gaming monitors with a refresh rate above 227 FPS. Moving on to 1440p, we observe an average frame rate of 121 FPS for the 3800X, while the 5800X delivers an impressive 206 FPS.

When it comes to Fortnite, it seems that the 5800X provides a substantial performance boost over its predecessor. If you're a hardcore Fortnite player, the upgrade to the 5800X could definitely be worth it. With that said, let's explore the performance of other games to get a clearer picture overall.

Dirt 5 Performance Comparison

🎮 Dirt 5: Upgraded Performance or Stagnation?

Turning our attention away from shooters for a moment, let's delve into Dirt 5. Unfortunately, this game doesn't witness any performance increase when upgrading to the 5800X, even at 1080p. The endgame benchmark results offer eerily similar frame rates for both CPUs, with an average of 126 FPS for the 3800X and 124 FPS for the 5800X. While some might argue that this signifies a loss in performance, it can be classified as a margin of error, as the difference is negligible.

Kicking things up a notch to 1440p, we do Notice a slight performance decrease, but the variance falls within the margin of error. The average frame rate for the 3800X is 103 FPS, while the 5800X delivers 103 FPS as well. Therefore, for Dirt 5, upgrading your CPU seems to offer no significant performance benefits.

Horizon Zero Dawn Performance Comparison

🎮 Horizon Zero Dawn: Uncovering the Performance Leap

Now, let's shift our focus to Horizon Zero Dawn, another popular title in the gaming community. Running the in-game benchmark at 1080p, we observe an average frame rate of 111 FPS with the 3800X. However, after upgrading to the 5800X, the performance jumps to 125 FPS, providing a noticeable enhancement even at 1080p. But when we move to 1440p, the average frame rate for the 3800X drops to 101 FPS, while the 5800X showcases 107 FPS.

Although the margin of difference is not significant at 1440p, the slight performance benefit of the 5800X remains visible. However, it's important to consider whether the investment required for the upgrade justifies the relatively small increase in performance.

Call of Duty Warzone Performance Comparison

Moving on to Call of Duty Warzone, one of the most popular games out there, we start the analysis at 1080p. With the 3800X, we achieved an average frame rate of 146 FPS, and upgrading to the 5800X provides a boost to around 160 FPS. The performance increase, although not massive, is still quite respectable and noticeable.

Shifting our attention to 1440p, we witness a slight performance decrease due to the higher resolution. However, the 5800X maintains its advantage, offering an average frame rate of about 124-125 FPS, while the 3800X clocks in at around 120 FPS. The difference of approximately five frames might be considered within the margin of error, but it's worth noting that the 5800X does provide a performance advantage over its predecessor.

Doom Eternal Performance Comparison

🎮 Doom Eternal: Unleashing the Beast

Next up, we have Doom Eternal, an action-packed and visually stunning game. Running the ultra nightmare game preset at 1080p, the 3800X delivers an awe-inspiring average frame rate of close to 350 FPS. Surprisingly, when we switch to the 5800X, the average frame rate decreases slightly to around 330 FPS. The reason behind this performance decrease is not immediately clear, though it may be attributed to specific sections or levels within the game.

Increasing the resolution to 1440p, the performance naturally drops, but the 3800X still maintains an impressive average frame rate of 288 FPS. On the other HAND, the 5800X demonstrates a similar average frame rate of approximately 250-275 FPS. Given these results, it's fair to conclude that there isn't a significant performance benefit in upgrading your CPU for Doom Eternal.
