Gaming Performance of the HP Omen 15

The HP Omen 15 is a highly requested Ryzen-based gaming laptop that boasts impressive specifications for a gaming machine. Equipped with AMD's 8-core Ryzen 7 4800H processor, Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti graphics, and 16GB of dual-Channel memory, the Omen 15 packs a punch when it comes to hardware capabilities. In this article, we will delve into the gaming performance of the HP Omen 15 by testing it with 20 different titles across various setting levels. Additionally, we will compare its performance against other laptops to highlight how it stacks up in the gaming arena.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Starting off with Red Dead Redemption 2, we utilized the Game's built-in benchmark tool to assess performance. At max settings, the FPS dropped significantly, indicating that higher-tier hardware is necessary for optimal gaming experience. However, by adjusting the settings to medium, we were able to achieve a stable 60 FPS.

Battlefield 5

Moving on to Battlefield 5, we tested the game in campaign mode. At ultra settings, the game ran smoothly above 60 FPS, while medium settings delivered a satisfactory 100 FPS with a 60 FPS 1% low result.

Control

With Control, we decided to disable RTX due to poor performance on GTX graphics. Under medium settings, the game maintained a consistent FPS above 60, proving that even at low settings, it still presented a visually appealing experience.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

By using the built-in benchmark of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we discovered that the performance of the Omen 15 was quite similar to other laptops equipped with the GTX 1660 Ti. However, for a comprehensive analysis, we will compare the Omen 15 with other laptops in this game and others.

Apex Legends

Testing Apex Legends with both maximum settings and minimum settings, we found that it ran smoothly at 100 FPS even with all settings cranked up. Even with minimum settings, the 1% low FPS still exceeded the maximum refresh rate of the display.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare

In campaign mode, Call of Duty Modern Warfare delivered acceptable performance at both maximum and minimum settings. Although the difference between settings was not as pronounced as in other games, the game remained playable even when maxed out.

Fortnite

Utilizing Fortnite's replay feature, we observed that the game ran without any issues at max settings, providing an average FPS of 100. By dialing down to medium settings, the 1% low was pushed closer to the display's refresh rate, resulting in an average FPS of 200.

CS:GO

Testing CS:GO with the ulletical FPS benchmark, we found that the results were satisfactory. However, we couldn't help but wonder how much better the performance would have been if HP had provided the option to disable optimus.

Dota 2

Similar to most laptops with similar specifications, Dota 2 presented no issues when running at all. Hence, we can move on to the next game in our testing lineup.

Overwatch

Being a less demanding game, Overwatch performed admirably at max settings in the practice range. The game achieved an average frame rate close to the refresh rate of the screen, and even at ultra settings, the 1% lows exceeded the display's refresh rate.

Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege was tested using the built-in benchmark tool with Vulkan. Even at max settings, the average FPS comfortably surpassed the display's refresh rate, with minimal performance differences between the top presets.

Metro Exodus

Using the built-in benchmark, we discovered that Metro Exodus's performance on the Omen 15 was on par with other laptops with the GTX 1660 Ti. However, it is crucial to note that these results represent a worst-case Scenario and should not be taken as an overall performance indicator.

The Division 2

Utilizing the built-in benchmark of The Division 2, we observed that the ultra settings provided a stable average FPS of 60. On the other end of the spectrum, the low settings provided more than double the average FPS.

Monster Hunter World

Running through Monster Hunter World's main town at max settings, we experienced playable performance, maintaining around 60 FPS for both the averages and the 1% lows. The stability of the 1% lows was particularly noteworthy.

Borderlands 3

Using Borderlands 3's built-in benchmark, we realized that hitting 60 FPS required high settings, whereas medium settings exceeded this benchmark for the 1% low. The disparity between these two levels was significant when compared to the other games.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Opting for the benchmark tool in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, we achieved optimal results with ultra settings, surpassing 60 FPS comfortably. Lower settings allowed for even better performance.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Employing the game's benchmark, we reached a stable 60 FPS with the very high preset. Notably, the 1% low for the very high preset exceeded even the average FPS at max settings.

Far Cry New Dawn

Testing Far Cry New Dawn with the game's benchmark, we noted that the results were not significantly different from laptops with similar specifications. Ultra settings came close to 60 FPS for the 1% low.

The Witcher 3

At ultra settings, The Witcher 3 presented playable performance, surpassing 60 FPS even for the 1% low. Interestingly, there was a noticeable performance gain at high settings, with the 1% low topping the average FPS at ultra.

F1 2019

Using the benchmark tool, we discovered that F1 2019 exhibited similar behavior as previous games. At max settings, the average FPS remained above 100. By adjusting one setting lower, we achieved even higher 1% lows.
